Ducati has made an interesting statement, The company admits that its supersport machines, the 959 Panigale and 1299 Panigale, have become a little too intimidating for some tastes. Which is why the Borgo Panigale built the more friendly Ducati 939 Supersport. the new Supersports are full litre-sized bikes possessing a similar riding position to sporty-styled commuter/learner bikes like the popular Kawasaki Ninja 300 and Honda CBR500R already on sale.
Despite being lower spec compared to the Panigales, the 2017 Ducati 939 Supersport offers adjustable Ohlins suspension, a quickshifter on the top S model and a chassis that could have been stolen from a Monster streetbike. Interestingly, this bike also gets a lovely single-sided swingarm that the 959 Panigale misses.
The 2017 Ducati 939 Supersport has three riding modes, 8-level traction control and 3-level ABS. Valve clearance checks are scheduled for every 30,000km. Adding to the practicality quotient is an adjustable windscreen and what looks like a fairly focused but far friendlier riding position compared to its faster siblings.
The Ducati 939 Supersport uses the same engine from the Hypermotard/Hyperstrada 939. But thanks to less restrictive intake and exhaust systems than the Hypermotard, the engine makes a bit more power with 115 HP (85kW) generated at 9000 RPM, two more bhp than the Hypermotard. With the engine tuned to deliver 80 per cent of the 97 N.m @ 6500 RPM torque peak at just 3000 RPM, the Supersport should deliver the same accessible mid-range performance as the Hypermotard.
With decent 210kg kerb weight, the 2017 Ducati 939 Supersport is designed to be versatile and flexible and should easily transition between everyday riding and fast weekend rides out of the city.
