2017 Ducati Monster 797 Coming Our Way

In 1993, Ducati began shipments of a bike that was destined to define the “naked bike” genre: the Monster M900. This simple, air-cooled, trellis-framed, easy-to-ride beast spawned two smaller siblings, the M600 and M750, and these Monsters continue to have a loyal cult following to this day. Fast forward to 2017, and Ducati is introducing the Monster 797, designed to embody the unique essence of the original ‘90s machines. After the Monster 696 and 796 were dropped from the lineup in 2014, this new Monster 797 (again) offering an entry-level option into the world of classic Ducati ownership.

The 2017 Ducati Monster 797 packs the 803 cc air-cooled two-valve L-twin that’s had the starring role in the Scrambler line-up for the past few years. With a claimed 75 BHP @ 8250 RPM and 50.8 lb-ft @ 5750 RPM torque, the little Monster should have enough go-juice on tap to keep even experienced riders from getting bored. There is no mention of electronic rider aids, but the 797 does get an LCD display and APTC slipper-style clutch.

The trellis frame is a one-piece design and isn’t a structural unit, as it is on the 821 or 1200, while the dual-sided swingarm and the wheels is styled more like that of the Panigale 959. Ten-spoke alloy wheels are shod with Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tires. A low 800mm seat height and 193 Kg wet weight (claimed) should make the littlest Monster easy to handle at parking lot speeds.

Suspension includes a non-adjustable, 43mm Kayaba fork and Sachs shock with adjustable spring preload and rebound damping. Brakes, meanwhile, are nearly the same as on the Monster 821, with Brembo M4.32 calipers biting on 320mm Brembo discs up front and the 797 using a 245mm disc out back. The only difference is that the 797’s front master cylinder is not radially mounted, and its rear caliper is a single-piston design (versus dual).

The Monster 797 is available in Ducati Red and Star White Silk, and should be in UK dealerships in April 2017 with starting price of £7499.
